So, for those of you who've been living under a rock for the past couple of months and missed hearing about their launch ( wayakka.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=cabaret&action=display&thread=1141465665 ) last week, Kookaburra is a new company founded by Peter Cousens. They intend to perform three shows a year once they get up and running. One will be an old classic, the second will be a newer piece, and the third an Australian work. I just hope they get their Melbourne leg sorted before too long, or it could get expensive Waiting for announcement of their first season, though. It'll be interesting to see what they choose. Their website is www.kookaburra.org.au/ for more information

For anyone who's able to catch it, the ABC Sunday arts program this week (7th) at 4pm will be featuring the Kookaburra launch.

If they are successful they might very well beat The Production Company at their own game.

They have very different goals, and I imagine will have a very different market than the Production Company.
Production Company has always been about being an avenue for regular productions of popular Broadway classics. Kookaburra is about putting on riskier shows like Australian shows and artistic shows.
And the Production Company is only active in Melbourne. In all likelyhood Melbourne will probably only get to see a third of what Kookaburra do. I'm sure TPC won't be worried.

It just sounds like a more professional outfit than The Production Company. Originally the Production Company spoke of doing rarely performed older musicals but that seems to have been abandoned in recent years (HELLO, DOLLY! ANYTHING GOES, THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG, SUNSET BOULEVARD etc).

I hadn't heard that, (just about anythings a rarely performed show at the moment) but I don't think it's really going to matter if Kookaburra has the same goals that TPC had 5 years ago. They're doing well with their current charter and it doesn't conflict with Kookaburra.
