New Artistic Director for Playbox
Monday 3 May, 2004
The Chairman of the Playbox Theatre, Paul Gardner, announced today the appointment of actor and director Michael Kantor as Artistic Director of Playbox from 2005.
Mr Gardner stated:
"We are delighted that Michael has accepted this position. His previous work with the Company has been exceptional. He is a bold young theatrical voice - pushing form, content and theatrical boundaries. His creative productions of Natural Life, Meat Party by Duong Le Quy and the most recent Babes in the Wood with Tom Wright have been highlights for the company."
"He has long been recognised as a positive force in contemporary Australian theatre with unique skills acclaimed by Robyn Nevin, Neil Armfield, Aubrey Mellor and Robyn Archer to name a few," Mr Gardner said.
Artistic Director at Playbox for eleven years, Aubrey Mellor said, "In the skilled hands of Michael Kantor, Australian theatre is more than alive and well. Michael is a director with strong creative and interpretive skills and a determination to advance the art of theatre and define it far from film and television."
In accepting the appointment, Mr Kantor said "It is with enormous excitement that I join the Playbox team. For me, Playbox has always been and needs to be the most dynamic company in Australia - pursuing, questioning and presenting the best contemporary Australian theatre. I hope to follow the enormous legacy of Aubrey Mellor - whose unflagging commitment to the playwrights and theatre makers of Melbourne and Australia has been a beacon in difficult times - with works that are rigorous, articulate and theatrical responses to the world in which we live. Theatre is unique in its ability to unlock the imagination of writers, directors, performers and audiences. I hope to allow the extraordinary imagination of our theatre makers to flourish
within the confines of the Malthouse and beyond."
