I went along to see the launch of Floyd Collins last week and thought I'd share. Firstly, let me say that the place was PACKED - at least a couple of hundred people I reckon. So I guess that tells us that there is indeed still a lot of support out there for Kookaburra or at least curiosity. Peter Cousins sang and he sang well although I have to admit that the music is pretty hard work for the listener. Just when you think you've hooked onto the melody, it changes. Michael Falzon was just fabulous. Such a beautiful, versatile voice and he performed the material with great heart. Perhaps I was simply more swept up in his performance because I also found his songs to be more melodic than the others. The three "reporters" sang an incredibly complex trio which was mightily impressive although I missed much of the lyric - I just couldn't keep up. Hopefully this was due only to the poor acoustics in the room and not my failing hearing or the overly complex material. The director Kate Gaul spoke passionately about their plans for the piece and she won me over. I'm certainly intrigued and I've booked my tickets. This show seems another risky move but kookaburra are proving that they certainly have balls.
