Peter Cousens CEO of Kookaburra The National Musical Theatre Company last night announced the 2008 Subscription Season.

SIDESHOW ALLEY a new Australian musical won the 2002 Pratt Prize for Best Musical and the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Original Score.

Set in the 1950’s in the colourful and bizarre world of an Australian traveling Sideshow. Billy, the young rugged tent boxer, Alec, the mysterious drifter and Rita, the exotic femme fatal, form a triangle of love, secrets and lies.

The dwarf, the half man-half woman, the bearded fat lady, the exotic dancers and tent boxing are all brought to life against a landscape of dusty eroticism in outback NSW. Dates, venue and cast yet to be announced.

It is a story of unbridled love and the discovery of identity in a world of prejudice. Music by Paul Keelan, Book and Lyrics by Gary Young – this will be SIDESHOW ALLEY’S Sydney Premiere.

Next Kookaburra will present Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TELL ME ON A SUNDAY.

TELL ME ON A SUNDAY charts the course of a young girl newly arrived in New York. Brimming with optimism, she sets out to seek success, companionship and, of course, love.

But as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties, frustrations and heartaches she begins to wonder whether - in fact - she's been looking for love in all the wrong places. TELL ME ON A SUNDAY will open interstate and tour to Sydney and regional centres. Music By Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lyrics By Don Black. Tour dates, venue and cast yet to be announced.

“This is a wonderful vehicle for a fabulous star performer!” said Peter Cousens.

The third production for the year will be the Australian Premiere of LITTLE WOMEN -The Musical, adapted from the Louisa May Alcott classic novel about the coming of age of the four remarkable March sisters.

This timeless tale about the power of family, friendship and romance will captivate the hearts of a new generation and be the perfect family Christmas entertainment.

Book by Allan Knee, Music by Jason Howland, Lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. Dates, venue and cast yet to be announced.

There have been three very successful movies of Little Women, first in 1933 staring Katharine Hepburn then again in 1949 with June Allyson and in 1994 starring Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon directed by Australian Gillian Armstrong

“A feel good musical whose star may possibly be discovered with the help of the Australian public and the power of television” said artistic director Peter Cousens.

Kookaburra is also planning a major concert event in conjunction with the Sydney Opera House and will be working in association to present another new Australian musical.

So much for that.

I'm so glad I went up to Brisbane to catch it. Sideshow Alley is beyond fantastic, and I know if it had played in Melbourne as it was damn well meant to, I could have easily gone a half dozen times. It breaks my heart a little that yet again, it's being shown such little faith.

Something's very wrong. I didn't get my way!

And the season has been officially launched.

SYDNEY -- Australia's National Musical Theater Co., the Kookaburra, will bow three tuners in its second season.
They are Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Tell Me on a Sunday"; Allan Knee and Jason Howland's "Little Women"; and "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," by Joe DiPietro.

"Sunday" will be directed by Peter Ross and star Jolene Anderson in a tour beginning July 29 in Wollongong, 52 miles south of Sydney.

Opera Australia's Stuart Maunder will direct "Women," starring Hayden Tee, Trisha Noble and Judy Connelli; it opens Nov. 4 at Sydney's Seymour Center.

Tee also will star in helmer Darren Yap's "Change" opposite Katrina Retallick. Tuner premieres April 21, 2009, at the Seymour.

Kookaburra also announced at its 2008-09 season launch on Monday that it has commissioned Peter Rutherford and James Millar to write their second musical. Their tyro effort, "The Hatpin," is playing at the Seymour.
