I'm in the preliminary stages of maybe, possibly, thinking of putting on a musical revue, perhaps. ;D I was just wondering, in Australia, is it legal to shove a whole lot of musical theatre songs into a show and sing them onstage, and charge for tickets? Are there any royalties or anything that have to be paid? I just have no clue, and before I get to the planning stages, I'd like to know what I'd have to pay. Oh, and are the rules different if it's put on by a university ("education theatre")?

Oh, you mean a musical 'revue' I was confused for a moment. Yes, there are royalties to be paid, and the charge will depend on the scale of the production, so for a university production it shouldn't be too expensive. If you contact a licensing company, they should be able to give you more information about it.

I'm sorry! I'm sorry!
It's that time of uni session and I'm very tired... *slaps her English major self*
Talissa, what licensing company should I contact? The songs will be from musicals which are licensed by a range of companies...

99% of them would be either ASCAP or BMI I would think.

Really? Oh ok So would they just charge per song? Has anyone done this before?

A friend of mine put together a musical revue (which I was lucky enough to MD) by selecting 1 or 2 songs from each show.
Apparently, by sticking with less than 3 songs per show you can dodge expensive royalty fees.
She was actually was a uni student herself, studying law and specialising in intellectual property, so I assumed she knew her stuff. However I would suggest getting some professional advice on the matter before going ahead with it.
Best of luck with the idea!

Hi I have just been in an amateur production myself, and I am doing a musical theatre course at the moment. I was looking for the dialogue and music for some of the productions, and was told that you have to actually search on the internet to find out about getting the rights to putting something on the stage. It's actually quite tricky to find them, but I know that you have to actually write to the publishing companies, and write for permission, for the rights to broadcast whatever it may be. Amanda

If you haven't done this already you need to contact APRA (Australian Performing Rights Association). they have an office in Richmond (Melbourne). Give them a list of the songs you wish to use (some may not be available) they will get back to you with a royalty to be paid. This will probably be around 1.8 to 2% of your gross box office revenue.
