I went to see BBB last night, and I was very impressed. It was a minimal set and costumes, but very effective. I particularly liked the placement of the orchestra, especially since it meant the conductor could be involved in the action on-stage.
Tamsin Carroll did a wonderful job as Rosie, really shining out. I now see what the hype has been about, and I just wish she'd been in Man of La Mancha, because she would have made it perfect.
Philip Gould was good, making the role of Albert Peterson very believable.
Natalie O'Donnell acted the part of Kim McAffee excellently, but I wasn't particularly impressed with her singing. I understand that they want Kim to sound young, but I think that could be done without having such a weak-sounding head voice. Her lower registers were great, though.
Spencer McLaren did very well as Conrad Birdie, but I feel he could have done even more with the role. It didn't quite have the right power and presence. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful performance.
The other MacAfees made for a very amusing, if stereotypical, family for Kim, and Thomas Lacey as little Randolph was very much appreciated by the audience.
Deidre Rubenstein did a magnificent job as Mrs Mae Peterson, and got a wonderful response from the audience. She struck the perfect balance between exaggerating the comedy of the character, and keeping her believable.
I look forward to hearing what other people thought.

I just got home from seeing it I was in the middle of the second row, absolutely perfect seating! I don't think people to the left would have had as good a view of most of the action. I loved how it was done concert-style and with the entire set being what, two tables and chairs people carried on as necessary So all you really focus on are the performers. And each time she was on, even when not singing, I admit I was completely focused on Tamsin She truly was the entire show, I can understand why all the reviews I've read so far have just singled her out. Incredible!!! One thing I noticed because I was so close, the poor girl must have hurt her knee because she had a huge band-aid on under her stockings - then when there was that dance number which involved a lot of getting under the table (can't reach the programme to remind myself what it was called!) when she emerged there was a large bloodstain on her white dress, the poor thing! That had to have hurt! I can't say I was so impressed with Natalie O'Donnell either - I thought the teen girl in the blue would have been much better. Thomas Lacey was gorgeous ;D He got practically a standing ovation at the end! And I loved Daryl trying in vain to get himself in front of the cameras ;D And Albert's mother....blimey she was hilarious!!! So nasty to poor Rosie, but oh so funny. Loved her Favourite number, apart from any and all of Rosie's would be The Telephone Hour.

Okay this is the same post I posted on another board so you'll have to excuse the crappy version My review will be up on my site tonight sometime and this week might even get a soundbyte or two from it as well. I'm glad I wasn't at the performance where she smashed her knee going under the table and came out with a nice bloodstain *ouch*. Tamsin was unbelievable last night definitely the standout and totally agree with all the reviews, etc written about it - they were spot on their money. Favourite song: Without a doubt Spanish Rose. Though I did enjoy a few others including One Last Kiss and Put on a Happy Face. Though looking back on it now I wish I had seen David Campbell in concert on Friday night because Katie McCarthy (his g/f) convinced 15 members of BBB to go to see the concert <g> which is quite funny since half of them have worked with each other before Yesterday I saw two Carrolls in one day (Peter in Christian Brothers - absolutely brilliant and he sung in it - and Tamsin in BBB) and what it confirmed (or should that be cemented) was along with the Otto and Bell families the Carroll family are the best father/daughter performing acts combination in this country (certainly the best musical theatre performers). Cool! I am in this musical at this very moment! Do you remember what the person who played Deboarah Sue's name was? That's who I am! I am also in the teen trio! Our musical is a really evil version though! We have a ballet where we all kill Albert in different ways, and I don't want to mention some of the other stuff!

I don't remember who played Deborah Sue straight away, but I check in my program later. That sounds very....original. It sounds rather like a production of Les Mis I heard about, in which they were all throttling each other at the wedding ~Julia

Cool! I am in this musical at this very moment! Do you remember what the person who played Deboarah Sue's name was? Isn't Deborah Sue the friend in it? If so, we were discussing this after we saw it in Melbourne and am about 99% sure it was Katie McCarthy who played the role.
