I saw it last night and it was breathtaking!
It's hard to write a review on it, because I don't want to spoil it for you - it was a very surprising show and the surprises were what made it awesome!
Ok, I'll go through actors...
Jay Laga'aia (Mufasa): Nice movement, beautiful voice, though seemed to lack something totally whole in the acting... it seemed as though he putting quite a bit of it on, and it wasn't natural all the time.
Tony Harvey (Scar): Very nice interpretation. It was quite similar to the movie scar in places, but then it was also quite different in others, which I liked. Nice voice, awesome mask. Be prepared with the hyenas was amazing.
Buyisile Zama (Rafiki): She was hilarious. Her voice was strong and piercing, though very beautiful. Made Circle of Life wonderful. Great comic actress.
Terry Bader (Zazu): very similar to the movie. Handled his puppet with ease, and had a wonderful voice. Great ability to sing, dance, puppeteer, act, and produce wonderful facials all at the same time.
Tim Richards (Pumbaa): Exactly like the movie. He was good at everything, but a bit of difference would have been nice.
Jamie McGregor (Timon): great comic actor. Had wonderful interaction with chorus members. Although, like Pumbaa, he was almost exactly like the movie.
Vince Harder (Old Simba): movement was so energetic! Really captured Simba's youthful vibrance. He movement matched the young simba's movement to the tee - they were a perfect match. Voice very nice aswell. Overacting a bit, but I guess that happens when you try to be a lion...
Jennlee Shallow (old Nala): beautiful beautiful strong voice. I think the song is "Shadowland"(?) that she sings - it was perfect with her singing it - so strong and emotional! Very nice movement too. Gorgeous accent.
The Hyenas(Cherine Peck, Kenneth Moraleda, Ed Wightman): exactly like the movie. Awesome puppets. Very funny.
Young Simba (I think it was Edward Arreza that I saw): awesome movement - very cute and loveable and great interaction with other characters. Alright singing voice (it was good, but the volume kept going down and up a bit with moevement).
Young Nala (I have no idea which one I saw... perhaps Ivy Negre or Karla Soondarum): very cute - nice acting. Nice singing voice. Great simba-nala interaction.
Ensemble: gorgeous, strong voices. The african sounds were perfectly recreated! Such piercing voices! Beautiful! They seemed to seperate the ensemble into mainly dancers, and mainly singers for both sexes, so that each group could concentrate on that aspect more (though both did both). It was a good effect, and worked well.
One gripe: I wish they'd decided whether they were going with American or Australian accents. Half the characters were doing one, half were doing the other, some sounded American on certain words (especially the kids, who sounded Australian apart from certain famous movie phrases which they did American). It sounded a bit wrong.
Stunning sets and costumes and masks. Just a wonderful show.
