First off, I'm going to say how glad I am that I decided to see this concert. I hadn't seen either Rachael or Todd live on stage before (I was going to see Singin' in the Rain, but then I had all my friends back out on me at the last moment), so even though I knew they were good, I wasn't sure exactly how good. They worked together brilliantly, especially in the SitR medley, which was hilarious, and glowed individually.
Rachael's a gorgeous performer, who held the audience well, and managed to fill the stage much more than her size would suggest. All That Jazz and the Moulin Rouge medley were especially fun. Someone To Watch Over Me was also wonderful, especially since it seemed to reach the very bottom of her range. (Side note: Okay, so I'm sure I've mentioned before that, although a talented performer, Caroline O'Connor perhaps wasn't quite the perfect choice for Aldonza in MoLM. Now that I've seen Rachael, I'm beginning to wonder if she might have been.)
Todd, although he doesn't have the same clarity of voice of Rachael, does have just as much spark as a performer, and in songs like his Peter Allen tribute (I Still Call Australia Home and I Go To Rio) and Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me, you could really tell he was in his element. And the one which I didn't expect to be one of the standout songs was Mr Cellophane, which was wonderful. Think we'd be able to cast Chicago with him in there? ;-)
Todd and Rachael were wonderfully accompanied by the Australian Pops Orchestra and Ashton Smith Singers of Australia, to make for a wonderful evening, and of course, holding it all together was Nancye Hayes, who even had a dance cameo.
