Damn they were right when they said TPC got a truckload of nominations - yay for Mitchell K not musical theatre cats but damn those Drama cats yet again are tough - people weren't sure if End of the Rainbow would fall into musical theatre or theatre and it's been submitted into drama theatre - so unless they change it, it'll be interesting to see it go head to head with the STC productions come Helpmann time.

There are some tough ones in the musical theatre categories! I'm just glad I'm not the one who has to decide these things, because there are some damned close calls in there.
And definitely way to go TPC for all those, especially the Oklahoma cast!

totally agree! this is one of the hardest years yet. I thought mitchell was hilarious in Oklahoma but the stand out for me was the guy that played Jud- is that James Millar? in a comedy show what he did was amazing being the only dramatic one. Glad to see amanda harrison up there twice. she deserves both those awards, but why arent we seeing lucy durack? that seems very unusual to me. also why no Judi Conelli?

That's exactly what I thought about James in Oklahoma. He provided such a stunning contrast to the rest of the show that he really stood out. It's such a hard one, because he and Mitchell could both get that, but each for such different reasons. It's like apples and oranges.
I've never been a huge fan of Judi, but I'm definitely disappointed not to see Lucy's name there! A huge shame.

There is one HUGE omission, THE LION KING. How can that show not receive so much as one nomination? Surely this was the best musical to play in Melbourne in 2005.
How can The Production Company receive so many nominations? For that matter they shouldn't even be considered for awards. Yes I know that a show only has to play 5 performances to qualify, but what they put on stage really isn't award standard. Nancye Hayes is nominated for Aunt Ella? It is practically a cough and you'll miss it role.
Some of these nominations are bizare. Almost as maddening as when a few years ago Zoe Caldwell was brilliant in THE VISIT for the MTC and someone in a minor role was nominated over her in the same play. She has multiple Tony Awards but was not considered good enough for a dinky Green Room Award. Go figure!

what they put on stage really isn't award standard. As opposed to what: Dirty Dancing and a couple of jukeboxes? I haven't yet seen the Lion King, but as I understand it, the creative awards are for the best, not the most expensive. As for the acting awards, its the opinion of a group of people who's opinions are valued a lot more than mine. And for good reason. We have our biases, and they probably do to. But it's not like they have some secret agenda or anything. I can see a lot of sense in the nominations. James P.S. If you cough enough to miss Aunt Eller in Oaklahoma!, it's time to give up the cigars. Some of the greatest performances of all time have been in roles half the size.

I think The Lion King isn't nominated because this year the Music Theatre panel seems to only have local practitioners as eligible.
So, in The Lion King were pretty much only talking about (most of) the performers - and there's not too much that's award-worthy there. Everything else is a recreation of some other production.
But why don't they have a Best Production category?

I think they changed Best Production that it now gets unveiled on the night, but I might be wrong - I remember after Cabaret's clean sweep two years ago they changed some of the cats, etc.

Re only local practioners for the Green Room Awards, Arlene Phillips is British.
Some questions about the Green Room Awards. How did THRILL ME manage to get three nominations? It was universally panned by all the critics. I can't understand how three people can be nominated from one show in one category (Best Male Supporting Role OKLAHOMA!) what, no one in any of the musicals presented in Melbourne in 2005 came any where near these three guys in a concert OKLAHOMA?. That's a slap in the face for male actors working in musicals. Nor can I believe that any of the Production Company Shows can be considered better than THE LION KING. How can Caroline Gilmer be nominated for a Leading Actress role in show that is an ensemble show (MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL)? Maybe there should be an award for Best Ensemble. I think the Green Room Awards people need to sit down and re examine their charter if they wish to be taken seriously (as they do) like the Helpmann Awards.

Umm...did you see Oklahoma? It didn't look like a concert to me. It looked like a tightly choreographed, smartly directed and beautifully performed MUSICAL without a set. When a set makes a performance is when the Lion King wins awards. That is a show about spectacle.
And I believe anyone with limited rehearsal should be lauded for giving amazing performances, in such a limited rehearsal time, as all of those people did.
Lion King is a wonderful spectacle. So let's ask the green room awards people to do a new catergory: Prettiest pictures, most expensive sets, best puppets.
But in terms of performance I remembered alot more performances from many other things I saw. Including Oklahoma- I also thought there were performances in many other shows that were good too. For example- I hated dirty dancing and didnt think that was a musical- but i sure as hell respected the performance of some of the actors in it, thats for sure.
A performance award has nothing to do with production values.

oh, and there is award for best ensemble. scroll down the list. I myself think caroline gilmer was a great leading actress, as were her other leading counterparts, and very deserving of a nomination.
also- a question- was lion king not moninated in the previous year? maybe shows that have had recasts dont get nominated? i dont know. but i saw mostly every professional musical in melbourne in 2005 and i cant think of any others than sunset, menopause, kiss me kate, oklahoma, dirty dancing, saturday night fever and lion king.

Hi Martin Croft here Vice President and Panel Head for Green Room Music Theatre. Although it would not be appropriate for me to discuss the nominations I can bring some clarity to The Lion King situation as it is not a secret. The producers of The Lion King were asked on a number of occasions if they wanted to be considered for nomination. They were not able to offer the panel tickets!!

Thanks for the clarification regarding THE LION KING.
There is no 'Best Ensemble Performance' category. What there is is' Featured Ensemble Performance' for an individual in an ensemble. The Green Room Committee should reconsider this as to nominate an individual from an ensemble would I think create allsorts of bitterness within a company.
I don't really think that The Production Company shows should even be considered in this prize giving as they are not full productions. If they were to be nominated maybe they should have their own (small) category whereby they compete with each other or similar presentations.
