I'd forgotten all about that! He came and did a concert in 2004 and Jill Cason sang with him then, as did Di Briffa and the cast from Fiddler on the Roof (singing Do You Hear the People Sing). He's very entertaining and worth seeing. Oh...and he can sing a bit too! Buff

Yeah, they're doing it in conjuction with the musical theatre course students and UTas. I know most/some of the students will form the chorus and they are flying in people from the mainland to play the leads. In the DEC, so should be awesome. W00t.

I know most/some of the students will form the chorus and they are flying in people from the mainland to play the leads. Why don't they try to cast at least some of the leads from local talent? Must feel like a slap in the face for the performers in the south who would love to try out. I know Cats is a pretty demanding show for the leads - you would need to be an exception dancer and singer, but surely there is at least a few people who could cut it. I know it's a show I would never audition for - they would have to rename it to "Lumbering Elephants" Buff

There was a story in the Examiner today about the Rob Guest concert, including a pic of him with Jill Cason. Click here to view it. Sounds like a similar concert from 2 years ago. I've spoken to Jill and, strangely enough, she's very excited! Buff

Haha yay go Jill! I luff her.
Yeah I know what you mean Buff! I think they're more interested in making it a huge show and getting more ticket sales. I do remember LMS wanted to fly in someone for Les Mis ... or something ...

Yes, that was the plan. But it was only one role, not several. Buff

Good on them for teaming up with the music theatre course. What a great idea, and fantastic that Uni has seen the terrific opportunity in a project that will engage students with the community and skill them up. Just as a little polemic: I dearly wish that more people would realise that our Launceston theatre school is under DIRECT THREAT from UTas/government rationalisation (as seen in the paper the other day) and it would be fantastic if EVERYBODY (whether in independent/community/professional circles) would get behind it. The course (and its graduates) contribute so much to high-quality theatre: at Uni, at LMS, at Three River, at the Players, at Centr Stage, in independent "straight" theatre... it would really be a shame for the community at large not to strongly encourage the Uni to ensure that this professional and specialist course continues here. In Launceston. Apologies for my little rant: I know students (and the "makers") of the musical theatre course. It's nothing against them. I just know that rationalisation will occur eventually, and know that it won't go to Launceston's benefit. Just took the opportunity to "put this idea out there". Congrats, too, to Josh on Stepping in Shadow. Heard nothing but good things, and the LMS (apart from tech hitches) heard that Little Shop has gone great. Hope to get there next week. Cheers. (and please support the Uni, or any graduate you happen to come across!) MB

Very, very true, it does need to be supported more. The best straight dramas I've seen here are the ones the UTas students do. I'd be doing the course myself but I don't think it has enough exposure or career opportunities, I've heard they can't even get scouts/agents to graduation performances over here which is a shame.
I'm still gutted that UTas used to have a dance course, but now don't. We don't want to see the acting course go that way.
Thanks MB, the show was a lot of fun hehe. And no surprise on the technical hitches for Little Shop, we had more than our fair share too, it's just bound to happen. I'm hoping to see it soon but I'm finding it really hard to afford the ticket price. $28.50 for an Earl show is a bit steep.

I noticed that "High School Musical" is going to air on Southern Cross TV on Saturday night. I just might have to watch to see what all the fuss is about. Buff

After seeing "High School Musical", I have to agree with Lana's comments For my part, I just think High School Musical is an awful show, regardless of how popular the soundtrack was. I like modern shows, but I'd rather something with a bit of substance that isn't just pop song after pop song strung together by a shaky plot. However, I accept that I'm not the target demographic for the show, and I know it's really popular with teenagers so it should do well. I'm sure PTB will do a great job with it, but that doesn't mean I personally have to think it's a great show. Buff

I wondered what you'd make of it, Buff! I'm glad you agree with me, I must say.

Apparently there was an audition notice for the Launceston Players production of Stepping Out in last Saturday's Examiner, for those that walk the actor/tap dancer line. I haven't posted this in the Auditions page since Marg Dick was at great pains to explain it was the play, and not the musical; and this being a musical forum and all. Probably best to go to the Players website and grab their contact number for details. I'd post it but I'm too lazy and I've just worked the overnight shift and I'm not making much sense.
Also: support the gorgeous and bubbly Teena O'Keefe and her dance school Dancefit by coming to the concert, Sun 10 Dec at the Princess. The esteemed Lock Brownlie will be making his last appearance (for a while) on the Launceston stage with a group of talented and wonderful dancers. Oh, and me too ;D
Good luck to all singing in Carols by Candlelight!

Hey Tash, long time no see! I did see the audition notice but promptly forgot about it! Maybe because the words tap-dancing were involved! Are you involved in Carols this year, Tash? I haven't heard much about the line up except, The Fellas & Little Shop cast. Buff

Hello
What a great site!
I hope this is not too off topic - esp. for a newbie - but wondering if I could plug a Tassie theatre performance that isn't musical?
Please delete if I transgress.
The fourth One Day project is on Sunday 10th December, 8pm in the Earl Arts Centre.
Over 40 grads of the UniTas theatre degree write, rehearse, produce & perform 5 original one-act plays in just 24 hours.
As you can probably imagine, it's a very exciting, edgy show. The project has been running for 2-and-a-bit years now and we've created 15 new works, ranging from comedy to absurdism to relationship drama, metatheatre and the downright obscene.
Some names from musical theatre circles include Georgie Todman, Travis Hennessy & Libby Jowett (all acting) and Annelies Crowe (ex-St Cecilia) directing. There are 5 writers, 5 directors and 16 performers all up, supported by a dozen or so production crew.
There's door sales available ($15/$12) and who knows what you're going to see! How fun!
We really want people to come along and see what we're up to in this project. It really is a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kinda night Love it if you could all check it out!
Hope it's OK posting this here - but I look forward to hanging around here more (some very - vibrant? - discussions!!)
Cheers Stuart Loone AD of One Day Projects
