LMS had their AGM on Tuesday night - anyone get there? Anything interesting to report? I missed it again! It was my birthday, though so it's a good excuse! Buff

Hey there guys.
Have heard that Launceston College may be up for, variously, "Witches of Eastwick" or "Fame". Can't confirm either - but let's hope that they don't mess with their production team - worked so well in 2004 and 06.
Cheers MB

That'll be the third year in a row that a college has done Joseph ... but I suppose in three different parts of the state. It's a good one for schools.

I believe that Scotch Oakburn are up for Beauty and The Beast.

Yep, just heard that last night too! I really wish they would take it to the Princess ... the Horton really kills and it and people don't take their musicals seriosuly ... eg doing them again two years later because obviously their performances don't count.

I haven't seen a show at Scotch yet, but having been on stage, it's not the biggest space I've seen. I can't imagine how Beauty and the Beast will fit Princess Theatre would be a more logical place to stage the show, but I suppose it would add to the cost of the production. Buff

Not sure what you mean with that - but agree with the Horton issue. SOC has always had a terrific wrap for its straight plays - I think musicals are a pretty new idea for them. Prolly trying to compete with the LC/Newstead juggernauts (which have the dual focus of performer development and, almost as importantly, as a yearly PR campaign.) The SPats and LCGS musicals are a little more established than Scotch's but - that said - Scotch is the only school that really focusses on a "whole school" approach to straight drama - and jeez they've had some corkers. I meant that it's just a rule that you don't repeat musicals until a certain amount of time has passed ... being able to just redo SOC musicals means they aren't at a high enough stage.
I'm a little biased, but I think St Pat's musicals are in the same ball game as Newstead and LC, but Grammar are pretty much the same at Scotch. St Pat's are never quite as good and the other two colleges, but maybe just because it's grade seven to twelve and there's a lot more youngies.

I getcha now. I didn't realise that SOC had repeated itself though... have they done B&B before? (not the quaint homestead with floral quilting, but the musical)

Hahaha no they haven't - and I think the rights for amatuer musicals haven't been out for long for B&B. I mean LC did Grease two years after SOC, and now Newstead is doing Cabaret two years after SOC.

With all the different groups putting on shows (Players, LMS, PTB, SOC, LCGS, StP, NC,LC, PCYC - that's a list just off the top of my head) it bound to happen that shows get repeated. It's not such a bad thing in my opinion because you get to see different takes on the shows. And it gets people involved and interested in musicals. Having said that, it's also good when something new or different comes along. Keeps the musical scene fresh and appeals to different demographics. Buff

Rob Guest appearing at Princess Theatre this Saturday night 8 pm. Local singer Jill Cason performing with him I have heard. Haven't seem him in concert before, but believe he puts on a great show, singing heaps of favourites and chatting with audience. Hope Launceston theatre goers support this show or we won't get performers of this calibre to Tassie. Buy your tickets!
