Launceston Musical Society had their AGM last night. Two shows for 2008 voted on were: Blood Brothers Oliver Buff Well I hope the people that voted for this show aren't the same ones that poo-poo-ed the idea of LMS doing Oliver about 4 years ago... Otherwise Oliver will go the way of Music Man & Les Miserables. BTW... anyone keen to see Les Mis can catch it in 2008 in Hobart. A major new production will be produced by Craig Wellington & directed by Robert Jarman. Musical Direction by Iam Williams. Bravo Hobart, for giving audiences crowd-pleasing shows.

Bravo Hobart, for giving audiences crowd-pleasing shows. Interesting call, considering the likelihood of a professional production in Melbourne next year as well. Buff

No, not an interesting call at all Buff. A smart move. A VERY smart move. Remember, the bulk of Tasmania's theatre-going audiences are actually in Tasmania. Not Melbourne. (ie Cats with 20,000+)
And given the current financial standing of at least one local company who is "getting back to basics" with activites such as lamington drives & sausage sizzles to fund their ongoing viability, perhaps some Lonnie thespians could take a leaf out of Hobart's book.
Thoughts?

(ie Cats with 20,000+) I suppose I'm one of the strange breed who are happy to travel to Melbourne and Sydney to see a show. Absolutely agree that Les Mis will be a financial success because of the captive audience here in Tassie. Just as an aside, I ran into a friend of mine yesterday who lives in Melbourne. She flew down to see "Cats" because one of her friends was in the chorus! And given the current financial standing of at least one local company who is "getting back to basics" with activites such as lamington drives & sausage sizzles to fund their ongoing viability, perhaps some Lonnie thespians could take a leaf out of Hobart's book. Not sure which group that is, but understand your point. I'm not completely in the know about the Hobart musical scene - how many schools/colleges put on shows? To me it seems that in Launceston not only are there the 2 main theatre groups but also the local colleges (Launceston/Newstead/St Pats/Scotch/Grammar), smaller theatre groups and various dance groups all putting on shows, it's a saturated market. Plus Devonport are putting on good quality shows 45 minutes up the road. To me, it seems that the supply is exceeding the demand - hence the need for extra fundraising. I, for one, did not go to all the shows available this year - time and finance constraints restricted me, as much as I would have loved to have gone to more shows. Buff

Les Mis in Hobart is from Wednesday 12 to Monday 24 March - no shows on Sundays or good Friday, but 2 shows on Saturdays. 12 shows in 12 days - that's a big schedule! Tickets range from $59 to $79. Buff

Thank you for the welcome. Does anyone know cast details of Les Mis yet? I asked at one of the booking agencies today and they said it was selling like hotcakes but they couldn't give away cats details yet.

I've not been able to find anything myself yet. You would think they would be letting people know, especially as tickets are on sale already. Buff

Tamar Tidings opens tonight at the Old Seaport Marina, Launceston. Quote from their Website: www.tamartidings.comTamar Tidings is a rehearsed theatre production on a barge that docks at selected accessible pontoons stretching along the full length of the Tamar River, from Launceston to Low Head. On the floating stage is an amalgam of contributions from all Tamar-based theatre / music / dance groups that tells the story of the Tamar River as a whole-family entertainment. In tune with the great tidal movement of the Tamar River, Tamar Tidings is about ebb and flow, about highs and lows, birth and death, nourishment and destruction. And in the same way that the tides are impelled by exterior forces, the people of the Tamar Valley, whom this play celebrates, are not always able to stay in charge of their own lives. The 14 scenes of the play move from the birth of the river, through Aboriginal settlement and the first European child born on its banks, through to the destruction of the 1929 floods and World War Two and a foreshadowing of more recent events. The Tamar itself is personified by three spirits which represent the many aspects of the river as it interacts with the human population, including both its beauty and generosity, and its violence. The Spirit of Beyond speaks for the world beyond the immediate present of the Valley, and is able to foresee the future Performance Dates Old Sea Port Marina Monday 29th Oct 7.30pm Tuesday 30th Oct 7.30pm GeorgeTown Thursday 1st Nov 7.30pm Friday 2nd Nov 7.30pm Windermere Sunday 4th Nov 2.00pm Monday 5th Nov 2.00pm Gravelly Beach Wednesday 7th Nov 7.30pm Thursday 8th Nov 7.30pm Clarence Point Saturday 10th Nov 2.00pm Sunday 11th Nov 2.00pm Gravelly Beach Tuesday 13th Nov 7.30pm Wednesday 14th Nov 7.30pm

Thanks for that Di. I'd forgotten to mention "Tamar Tidings" recently. Very remiss of me. Looks like a massive production - hope it all goes well. Good luck to all involved. Buff

I'm informed by a reliable source that Brett Budgeon has been offered a lead role and will be travelling to do it. Buff

Valjean - Brett Budgeon Javert - Chris Richardson I've seen both these guys perform - both excellent. Well worth seeing the show just for them. Might have to look into a trip to Hobart next year.... Buff
