Hi guys, I'm back from leave and have access to a computer.
Well - what a controversy!
I haven't had a good chat about this with the people who would know, but my understanding is that there were lots of little reasons why Les Mis was in trouble. The committee was trying to "patch holes in a sinking ship" (my quote, not anyone elses), but then there was a lack of interest in the back stage side of things and the final straw was the MD having to resign due to family health issues.
Yes, in accordance with the constitution, this will have to go to a vote a meeting of members, but from what I can gather the committee see it as no longer viable and will be presenting this to the members.
My view? I would have loved to be involved in Les Mis again as it's a great show. However, if was going to be a patched up job and not the best show LMS could put on, then it should be shelved. It would do the society and the show itself a disservice doing a substandard version.
What is to replace it? That's still under discussion but no doubt will be cleared up at the next meeting. A concert (or series of concerts) and a society dinner has been suggested. The second production later in the year is still to go ahead (Little Shop of Horrors).
Finally, to our guests who have posted - welcome! Feel free to sign up and post, not just in this thread but on the rest of the board as well.
People are allowed to be members of the two groups - I know my family is, having been involved in shows with them both.
The enormity of the role of MD requires the person to be based in Launceston. There is a limited pool of MDs to choose from in Launceston, and an even lesser amount who not only have the expertise and experience, but also the contacts required to fill the orchestra.
I spoke to the MD of “Guys & Dolls” and she said she wouldn’t be ready to contemplate MD’ing Les Mis for another 10 years or so (I don’t know if the committee asked her to consider it or not). And this is an experienced music teacher who leads numerous musical groups (vocal & instrumental).

Firstly, why on earth would LMS stuff be discussed at a Players rehearsal.People are allowed to be members of the two groups - I know my family is, having been involved in shows with them both.

The view from here: LMS have cancelled their production of Les Miserables.
Seems they were having too many difficulties finding crew and then their Musical Director pulled out due to family illness.
