Please be advised the Launceston Players in association with the University of Tasmania are pleased to offer another weekend of theatre workshops, at the Annexe, Utas Inveresk campus. The workshops will be presented Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 November 2008 by Peter Hammond and Robert Lewis.
At this stage I need to establish interest in the workshops and who will be attending. Places will be limited so it is important to let me know if you are attending, early, to ensure a place for you. The cost for the full week-end session is just $10.00 per person. There will be no Friday night registration, feedback from the last workshop indicated this was not required so registration will be from 9:00 am Saturday morning. Coffee and tea will be available from 9:00 am Saturday and Sunday and the first workshop will commence at 10:00 am. It is critical that the workshops start on time.
Feedback from the last workshop indicated acting, movement for actors, directing and voice production as topics of most interest and accordingly a program has been prepared to accommodate what was most requested. The format for the weekend will be:
Saturday 10:00 am - 12:45 pm - Acting (Peter Hammond) 13:30 pm - 16:30 pm - Movement for Actors (Robert Lewis)
Sunday 10:00 am - 12:45 pm - Directing (Peter Hammond) 13:30 pm - 16:30 pm - Voice Production (Robert Lewis)
It would be appreciated if you could confirm your attendance for the workshops by Friday 31 October 2008. Please reply to Mark Horner at markeymark@live.com.au.
If you require further information I am happy to hear from you. If you want to pass this e-mail on to an interested friend or member of your theatre group, please feel free to do so.
I look forward to seeing you at the workshop.
Cheers
Mark Horner President Launceston Players

a message from the Vice President – Launceston Players - Stephanie Dilger
Good afternoon
As part of the Launceston Players ongoing commitment to Community Theatre in the north, I am delighted to announce that we are conducting a one day workshop on lighting techniques to be held on Sunday 16 November 2008.
The workshop will be limited to 10 participants only – so get in early!
We are all aware of the shortfall of technical crew to assist each of the theatre groups with their productions, so please pass this email on to your contacts.
Refer to the attached poster for registration details. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards

FROM GOVT MEDIA RELEASE MON 3/11/08
The stage version of High School Musical, the international show based on the original Disney Channel movie, is coming to Tasmania in May 2009, the Minister for Tourism, Michelle O’Byrne, announced today.
Ms O’Byrne said High School Musical - Live on Stage! was an exciting full-scale stage musical, and would tour Australia next year, including Hobart on its itinerary.
The musical, which is being co-produced by Jacobsen Presents and The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, will be performed at the Derwent Entertainment Centre.
“The dates for the show’s seasons beyond Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide have not yet been made public, but the organisers plan to make an announcement soon.
“People wanting to be among the first to learn about Hobart’s season dates can register on hsmliveontage.com.au
ENDS
So, I imagine the amateur rights for the show might have/will be withdrawn? Which would mean that this show is not a possibility for local productions for at least the better part of next year.

An interesting development - I wonder if Scotch Oakburn know this yet? Even if the amateur rights are not withdrawn, they would be mad to do the same show when a professional version is "down the road". Buff

Hello All Hope you don't mind me posting this information on behalf of Three River Theatre, about their production of The Crucible in 2009; a very exciting show indeed. All enquiries to them please! Cheers - Stu Public Meeting for Production of The Crucible
Launceston’s Three River Theatre will produce Arthur Miller’s classic drama The Crucible, at the Earl Arts Centre on 6-9 and 12-15 August, 2009.
The Company will hold a public meeting at The Annexe Theatre, Inveresk, at 6pm on Wednesday, 12 November. All members of the community who might be interested either in performing or working on production-side roles in the play are welcome to attend. Director Stan Gottschalk says, ‘This is a wonderful play for community involvement – there are 21 stage roles to be filled as well as work to be done building the set, creating costumes, lighting and sound, organizing the front-of-house, and making sure that the production runs smoothly both during rehearsals and in performance.
‘The play is considered one of the greats of 20th century drama and is as relevant today as the day it was written; it is regularly a part of school syllabuses and has also been the subject of two film versions, and has even been made into an opera’.
Stuart Loone PS - hey Buff - just saw some info you posted about a Mudlark workshop earlier in the year - thanks so much for that!

No problems Stuart! Although this is technically a musicals board, theatre in Tassie is so tightknit and people perform in both musicals and straight plays, so anything theatre related is welcome. Buff

I heard last night that LMS have cancelled 'The Producers', which was set for July next year at the Princess. Is it true?

Had not heard that - I'll have to check my sources! Last I heard (about 2 weeks ago) it was still going ahead as I was asked if I was interested in being a part of the orchestra. Buff

I can confirm that "The Producers" is not going ahead. Among the reasons - the dates chosen clashed with a huge music convention in Launceston at the same time (which meant next to impossible to get a pit orchestra or a conductor as most would be at the conference); and the director had set some parameters in relation to sorting out the orchestra/conductor which were not met (obviously) so has accepted a role in Devonport Choral Society's production of "Sweeney Todd" Replacement shows being discussed are "Pippin" and "Rent" Buff

Latest musical news from the south... the Tasmanian Theatre Unit Trust are following up their production of "Les Mis" last March with another production at the Theatre Royal Hobart. In October 2009 there will be a three week season of "Miss Saigon".

I've always wanted to see that show. My parents got to see it on Broadway ( - how jealous was I!) Hopefully I'll be able to get down to see it. Buff

Sooooooooooooo, if LMS are now thinking about Rent & Pippin, I guess they are also thinking about a different time of year (given the musician issue)?
And if so, when?? I have my final year of study next year...
Anyway, I'd love to do Rent... so disappointed when G-String boned it the other week.
