I didn't know they were rummours. It was definitely being talked about. A person who would have been involved asked if I was interested in playing in the orchestra (knowing how I dislike the show!). I'll check with them to see where it's at.

Grammar School are doing a show called "Smithy: The musical" - don't know much about it other than the title!

BREAKING NEWS:
The Launceston Musical Society is delighted to announce RENT as our major production for 2009.

To be directed by the much sought-after Jeff Hockley, RENT, will feature a large cast of singers, dancers and actors. Musical Director is Denise Sam along with a committed contemporary Band.

While we had previously planned to stage The Producers next year, with Launceston playing host to an international music conference, many of our players were unavailable.

Thus, RENT in 2009 and The Producers in 2010.

Dear Theatre People

I am writing to let you know about a small project that may be of interest to your theatre co.
Theatre 0363 is a website at blogspot which I hope will promote theatre and dance in Launceston and the north through posting production details, company news, audition notices, cries for help from your prop department, social functions etc.

It can be found at theatre0363.blogspot.com

(Snippets of information are up at the moment, and I’m still ironing out the creases.)

I guess what I’m looking at doing is maintaining a one-stop-site for all things theatrical in Launceston – professional, community, whatever – a place to celebrate, promote and critique the North’s terrific (and prolific) theatre community. Another link in the communication chain between all the companies.

It’s a project that’s been swimming around in the old head for a while now and all-comers are more than welcome to send through stuff they’d like the community (and other theatre folk) to know about. Just to let you know, too, that this is being done without any “company hat” on – it’s simply a “gathering spot” for information. It’s unbiased, volunteer and hopefully interesting.
Who knows – it could also be a place for more in-depth discussion about our theatre scene, with independent reviews and such-like. Thoughts?? Volunteers?? The plan, I guess, is to just put it up and see how the whole thing evolves.

Any and all contributions or feedback will be welcome and your support invaluable. Let me know what you think! I hope it’s going to be a useful and interesting project.

Launceston Players are producing the play "Whose Life is it Anyway?"

Synopsis for Whose Life is it Anyway?

Whose Life is it Anyway?
Imagine yourself trapped in your own mind. Unable to make any decisions about how you want to live your own life, and the only thing you can do is submit to the white coated authority figures as they take whatever is left of your dignity.

Whose Life is it Anyway? a play by Brian Clark explores the argument between the rights of the patient and the ethical concerns of the medical profession.

The Launceston Players production of Whose Life is it Anyway? is the Tasmanian debut of this hit Broadway play. It is a debate about the ethics of one person's right to choose whether to live or die. The play is based on a sculptor who, after a motor accident, is left a quadriplegic. Appalled at the prospect of a life in which he has no control of anything, he pleads with hospital authorities to help him die. When they refuse, he takes them to court.

Whose Life is it Anyway? was a 1980’s Hollywood movie starring Richard Dreyfuss and directed by John Badham. More recently the play was produced on Broadway with Kim Catrall of Sex in the City fame taking on a revised female version of the sculptor.
The play asks the audience to explore this provocative issue, which will strike a chord with many. It will make you laugh out loud at times but it could also make you cry. However, the lead character does not want pity but, like all of us, just wants to be heard.

Two new productions I've been told about:

Australian Premiere of Nunsense, Amen!
Nunsense A-Men is based the original Nunsense show with all of the characters but this time around the Nuns are fellas! Think of it as “Priscilla meets The Sound of Music meets Sister Act.”

Receiving rave reviews and standing ovations following the New York premiere in 1998, to quote the New York Times: “A change of habit, boy oh, boy!”

Encore will stage the AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE of this show in June, under the direction of Di Summers
